Tonight at 6pm will mark the International Premiere of ‘A&I’ in Scotland at the Edinburgh Futures Institute! After 8 months of planning, 3 months of production meetings across multiple time zones, and an incredible three days of tech in the venue, we excited to share this work with the city of Edinburgh. A big thank you to the @uoe_efi programmes team (Ioannis, Lewis, Alice, and Fraser) for inviting us to be a part of your ‘Making Waves’ Season, along with the amazing @core_event_services team (James, Swampy, and Ian) for bringing together many of the necessary technical elements to make the show happen abroad.

Today was an exciting day as the rest of the company arrived to Edinburgh! We are officially all here in Scotland! By the late evening we were able to have our first full company dinner together and celebrate that we were all together again for ’A&I’ except this time across the pond for our first International premiere of this work.

Tomorrow we start tech @uoe_efi at 8am with our performance on Thursday at 6PM! We can’t wait to bring ‘A&I’ to the Edinburgh Futures Institute!

The work evokes a ghostly ephemeral tone at times, as Luna uses the intangible elements of memory, light, and sound to hold the performers during the piece. Like the voicemail of a loved one who has passed away, the work taps into the timelessness and the impermanence of shared human experience and gives focus to the hopeful and ominous future we are creating with AI.

✨MEET LUNA, Orange Grove Dance’s AI✨

Luna is a new AI currently in its second stage of development that was created specifically for OGD’s work, A&I. Seen as a sixth performer in the space, Luna orchestrates the sensory landscape (media, sound, and lighting) for A&I by processing verbal prompts given by the other five on-stage performers. As the always-listening conductor, Luna then responds by transforming the dynamic canvas of the stage in real-time—marking a paradigm shift in the collaborative relationship possible between art and technology.

First conversation of building a “Luna” started back in 2022 with our amazing lighting designer and system programmer, Peter Leibold. Through different iterations and long nights, Peter coded, designed, and created our Luna. By first rehearsals with the company in early summer 2023, the first version of Luna was there. We built A&I alongside Luna and Peter. Luna was a critical collaborator from the beginning and thrilling to bring Luna to Dance Place.

Created while on residency @raumars , Rauma Liikkeessä (Rauma in Motion) — the Danceumentary film set for release later this year — shows the locomotion, mobility, and flow of the beautiful town of Rauma, Finland as the days transition from the greens of late summer to the majestic ‘ruska’ of fall. Involving and featuring hundreds of local residents, this dance documentary captures Rauma’s community and culture through choreographed and natural movement.
